Sitting curled up in a c h a i r
In an empty old café.
He l i f t e d up a chewed-up pen
And thought of who he might have been
Then he put the thing back down again
And he put his pad away
He saw a girl walk through the d o o r
He thought hem u s t have seen before
His eyes met hers but he wanted more
So he moved as if to speak
But he stopped h i m s e l f without a word
The whole damn thing was too absurd
He snuffed whatever fire stirred
He felt he was too weak
He saw her look at him
And he saw her look away
It was a perfect ending to a less thanperfect day
A girl walked through the snow supine
Like Dorthy Parker full of wine
Through squinted eyes she saw the sign
Of an empty old café
She hadn’t eaten once all day
She had no cash but she had a way
She’d get some food then she’d run away
It was a game she like’d to play
She went inside and she saw a guy
Shethought she knew but shedidn’t know why
She looked at him ‘till he caught her eye
Then she turned away her gaze
Her mind kept drifting to a time
When she knew a man with words and rhyme
But her memory was too sublime
To taint with present haze
She saw him look at her
And she had to look away
It was a perfect ending to a lessthan perfect day

And he saw her look away

She turned around and went out the door

As the waitress filled his coffee cup
She looked at him and smiled
